Impulse Control

  1. Can they turn off a screen when asked without a meltdown?
  2. Do they finish homework before asking for screens?
  3. Can they wake up on time without you dragging them out of bed?

Responsibility

  1. Do they keep track of expensive items (jacket, lunchbox, glasses)?
  2. If they lose something, do they try to find it or just say "I lost it"?
  3. Do they keep their current devices charged and not broken?

Social Emotional Skills

  1. Do they understand that text messages can hurt feelings?
  2. Do they come to you when something bad happens (instead of hiding it)?
  3. Do they have good friends in real life who they see face-to-face?
  4. Can they handle "FOMO" (Fear Of Missing Out) if they aren't invited to something?

Safety & Rules

  1. Do they understand what "private information" is?
  2. Are they willing to share their password with you?
  3. Do they understand that anything sent online is permanent?
  4. Will they agree to charge the phone in the kitchen overnight?
  5. Do YOU trust them? (Gut check).
Score < 10 "Yes"? Start with a "Starter Phone" (calls & texts only) or a Smart Watch instead.
