The Algorithm Trap: TikTok is not a social network. It is an entertainment network. The "For You" page is designed to keep your child scrolling for hours by analyzing exactly what they look at for even a split second.
โ๏ธ Note from the Editor
"My teen showed me her 'For You' page. It was suspiciously full of... cleaning videos? Turns out she knew I'd look. We had a laugh, reset the algorithm together, and now we send each other dog videos. Trust, but verify." โ Sarah, HAVENSE Founder
1. The "Secret Weapon": Family Pairing
You don't need to take your child's phone to control their TikTok. You can link your account to theirs using Family Pairing.
- Screen Time Management: You set a daily limit (e.g., 60 mins) from your phone. When time is up, the app locks.
- Restricted Mode: You can turn this on remotely to filter out mature content.
- In-Feed Ads: You can limit viewing of ads.
How to set it up: Profile > Settings and Privacy > Family Pairing.
2. Locking Down Direct Messages (DMs)
Predators use DMs. Period. If your teen is on TikTok, this setting is non-negotiable.
- Go to Settings and Privacy > Privacy.
- Tap Direct Messages.
- Set to No One (Safest) or Friends (Only people they follow back).
- Never leave it on "Everyone".
3. The "Digital Wellbeing" Checklist
If you allow the app, make these agreements first:
- Private Account Only: Strangers cannot see your videos.
- No Location Tags: Never tag your school or home city.
- No Uniforms: Never film in a school uniform (it reveals your location).
- The "Grandma Rule": If you wouldn't show it to Grandma, don't post it.
